i have a 1998 A4 2.8 quattro with 50,000 miles, last week jiffy lube changed my oil, i went on a round trip 600 mile drive..
when i got back, the next morning my oil late came on when i started it. i called jiffy lube, they came and added more oil, i drove the car to the jiffy lube dealer, they changed the filter again and topped off the oil... i drove the car 10 miles.....and parked it, then came out of a store, started the car and it was misfireing and un-driveable... the car was towed to my audi dealer, they noticed that jiffy lube had stripped the threads on the oil filter post, which is why i was losing oil and oil pressure... the diagnostic codes were coming up stating valve and cylinder problems the tech tore the engine apart.... when he took the head off, he found that the drive chain tensioner had snapped, he said in 30 years he'd never seen this happen to a car with such low mileage he said that it was not a result of the recent events over the last few days with jiffy lube!!!???? am i getting screwed here or what? any input ??? please help!!!!!............. signed.......teddyfive |

Re: 1998 A4 drive chain tensioner failed...help!
i've never seen a cam chain tensioner break (accpt on vr6 engines in vw)
they rarely go bad on 2.8L engines, only ones i seen bad on 2.8 are the ones with higher mileage 130k. 1.8t cam chain tensioners go bad all the time though, but 1.8t have oil pressure problems that 30v v6's dont. your car wouldnt run if the cam chain tensioner broke. the valves would have hit the pistons.
