Thinking of getting a used Expedition... Any advice?
I am thinking about getting a used Expedition. Something under 75-80k miles, probably a '99-'01. I have had some success over the years buying used vehicles, so I know the basics. What I am looking for is info and advice that is Expedition specific. I was wondering if there are particular model years to avoid (and why)? Also are there any recurring problems with these vehicles? What should I look out for when shopping for one? Would you owners recommend owning one? Any information would be helpful! Thanx

Re: Thinking of getting a used Expedition... Any advice?
I own a 99 expedition which now has 160,000 mile on it. The only repairs I've had to make other than normal maintenance is an alternator, brakes, and a DPFE valve. It's been a great vehicle! Mine is a 4x4 XLT with dual air and a 3rd row seat. The only thing I wish I would have got would be the far back side windows that open for ventilation. Oh I also have the 5.4 engine and have heard horror stories about the 4.6. Hope this helps, good luck.

Re: Thinking of getting a used Expedition... Any advice?
I have a 98 EB that has been great. It is showing over 92K so compared to some on here is hasn't been broken in yet. The only thing I've dealt with is the vacuum line on the back of the manifold went bad last summer causing a lean condition. Simple repair, tough to locate. Only other item is the door ajar light and chime. Every winter it requires a few WD40's in the latches to finally clear the alarm.
Love the vehicle. Also 5.4 and has the electric opening rear vent wings. |

Friends dont let friends drive fords!!!
I would steer away if i were you. They are known for electrical problems, random suspension noise that the dealers has no clue how to fix, and the engine compartment and engine itself is poorly designed. The heater hoses run right over the spark plugs, and they WILL leak eventually, causing misfires and the check engine light to come on. The plugs themselves are sunk super deep into the engine, so the water just pools in the pockets (as well as dirt and other foreign objects) My suggestion, get a tahoe Just my -Rob

Great year to buy! Buy years before 2003. We had one with 96K miles and it was GREAT!!
Bought a 2003, sued Ford and settled out of court!! |

Man if you are serious about buying an Expedition contact me. I'm in the military and had to put my 03 Exped Eddie Bauer in storage. It has like 21K miles on it(10K during vacation before going overseas). hit me up at tmonieja@hotmail and title it Exped. Name a resonable price.

Re: Thinking of getting a used Expedition... Any advice?
Yes dont do it nothing but problems, just look under oil leaks ejecting sparkplugs in other forums. There is a head gasket problem. Nothing but a money pit. If you do you better make sure that you purchase an extended warranty and look closely if they cover the headgaskets. I had the suspension repaired 2 times, torque converter, window, radio, display, head gasket and transfer case input seal. Good Luck i would by a Toyota.
