1996 blazer no spark

well i am assuming it is a no spark, ran the battery down before i could check spark. the reason i am thinking no spark is because i tried to spray starting fluid in it and no start at all, not even a attempt.

but here is there tricky thing. if i keep the engine block heater plugged in this thing will start every time and run like a new one.

this has new fuel pump also pressure is within all specs. new plugs wires cap and rotor less than 3000 miles ago.
my question is what sensor would cause this thing to get good enough spark to start as long as i keep the engine block heater plugged in, if not a sensor what else would cause this problem except when plugged in?

Re: 1996 blazer no spark

Start with the crank sensor (bottom of timing cover) and the coil. Heh, just went through this on a cutlass cierra... Same thing, starting fluid wouldn't even work. Crank sensor and ignition module.

Re: 1996 blazer no spark

has a new crank sensor, where is the module located is it the one mounted beside the coil or the one under the cap and rotor?

update: pulled the coil wire from the cap and it has spark coming from the coil wire.. dont have a tester to test the plug wires

Re: 1996 blazer no spark

got it started today and it has a rough idle and a hesitation from the take off..
i know i havent fixed it. it will not start in the morning or a couple days down the road after it sits..

but the rough idle and hesitation, i am sure are related also.

Module is right in front of the coil. It's the one with the silver fins beside it.

Stick a screw driver in the end of the wire you pull off the plug.Rest it so the driver will trow a spark to something metal.

Re: 1996 blazer no spark

The ignition module I'm talking about is under the dash, it's part of the ignition switch.

Re: 1996 blazer no spark

Is it throwing any codes? How old are your wires, plugs, and cap/rotor?

Re: 1996 blazer no spark

Nevermind, I reread your 1st post.

Check for a good spark at the wire, see what is going on there, also pull one of your spark plugs and see what it looks like, if its clean, or carbonized etc, etc.

Re: 1996 blazer no spark

ok took the distrutor cap off to see what it and the button looked like, this is kind of hard to explain what it looks like but here it goes. the firing points on the bottom side of the distributor cap are not firing in the center of the firing points. some are centered and some are off to the sides of the points. it is veru clean under there doesnt look like wear is a problem but the off center firing has me puzzled a bit?

anyone seen this before?

another quick question because i cant remember what the rotor button looked like when i installed it, alot of buttons has a T shape at the tip where it fires. but this one looks like the tip broke off or didnt have a T shape to begin with. just a straight tip.
