95 cutting out??

Hi,
I have a problem that has stumped me, I have a 95 sedan deville with a 4.9 motor that will die out if you try to accelerate alot. It starts up and idles fine, and will run good at low idle, but if you open it up about halfway it dies out, and has to be restarted. It is showing no codes , I am thinking fuel related, but not 100% sure. I would like to see if anybody has any suggestions before I go and start replacing parts.

A clogged fuel filter can cause what you describe as can a failing fuel pump. If the car has the original 11 year old filter, I'd change it on general principles and see if that helps. What is the condition of the air filter? If that is OK, ypur next step might be to check fuel pressure.

Re: 95 cutting out??

Thanks,
I will try the fuel filter first, and was suspecting pump might be pumping low volume. The air filter was not that bad so I don't think it is lack of air. What about egr valve, would a bad valve cause that? I looked in the intake by looking thru the throttle plates, and I see 2 pipes sticking up with what looks like carbon covering both. What are those, i haven't seen those before, I was thinking maybe pipes were clogged and that might have something to do with it.

Re: 95 cutting out??

The EGR tubes you see down the throttle body are good to keep clean. Use some carb cleaner and a wire brush to clean them out. I don't think that is what was causing your problems though. An EGR problem would produce a lot of knocking under throttle. I think your problem is fuel related, as mentioned. I'd change the filter, like he said, and I'd also check the fuel pressure. There is a schrader valve on the fuel rail to the left of the distributer fpr checking the pressure.
