2002 Camaro SS Vs. 79 BANDIT

hey guys dont know any of yall yet i usually stick to the firebird forum but i have a question for you guys ... theres a guy in town riding a stock 2002 camaro ss and i have seen the engine this car is bone stock. he thinks he can take my 79 trans am.. here are some specs you guys can do the math 400 ci from a 68 bonneville. Edlebrock intake manifold, Edlebrock Carb 750cfm 4 barrel, Mild cam not sure what type...was put in before i purchashed it. ShiftKit, Posi Rear, And other nick naks. anyways what im saying.. is im pretty sure it would be a good race untill about 60 then my car should just pull away no doubt let me know what you think maybe im completly wrong.. either way im happy thanks

Re: 2002 Camaro SS Vs. 79 BANDIT

Sorry but I would need more info. Such as what cam (I know you said mild but mild can mean anything from stock to aftermarket cam that doesn't create lope). I would also need to know what type of heads you got, as well as what gears you both have. I can tell you right off the bat. I wouldn't sleep on him and think your going to pull away up top all easy. Those LS1's are highway monsters. They have very little drivetrain loss and put out well above what they are rated at.

I thought you had the firebird symbol but that's just the reflection of a tree. Curious, why did you take out the 6.6 liter, I thought that was a bad ass engine??

Re: 2002 Camaro SS Vs. 79 BANDIT

my cousin has a '79 ta with 4.11's and the 6.6l and its pretty quick 0-80 but then it falls on its face where im sure an ls1 would keep on going (not sure what gears the ta was even offered in 79)...i'd have to agree tho that it needs more info on the cars but i'd say 0-60 you'd take him and from there the ls1 would pull away in my opinion

Umm i dont think that engine was all that compaired to its younger brothers. and i belive correct me if im wrong they started messing with emition controls in cars around then so you started losing power. when i bought the car the guy offered the engine with it for extra (non running) and my friend had a 68 400 that he had forever. so in short i changed to the 68 so i could build it up like i wanted it and for more hp. that engine stock in a bonneville was 360hp. soo with a little mods it should be a monster + i like the time i get to spend hanging out in the garage without the girlfriend man and machine

The 6.6 liter engine is an Oldsmobile 403, not the normal Pontiac 400 (6.5 liter).

Re: 2002 Camaro SS Vs. 79 BANDIT

Also, on a side note. The new emissions started effecting horsepower in muscle cars much earlier than 79. It actually started around 72 and also, just so your aware of this. In 68 they rated cars by gross horsepower. This meant that the engine was tested without any accessorys or exhaust. The actual number produced once the exhaust is plumbed and the accessorys are on is a bit lower.

What kind of track times are you turning? If it's not mid/high 12s or better then I wouldn't be so quick to pass judgement

The 400 was a 6.6L Also the 403 was a 6.6L. Both engines were avialable in the 79 T/A and neither one would hold a candle to an LS1...
I've owned a 79 T/A (NOT stock) and I'm sorry to say, my 85 IROC (when it was stock) would stomp all over it. I loved my T/A, and they were a great car for their day...but their day has long passed.
Car Craft pitted an LS1 SS Camaro against an old 396 RS/SS Camaro...it wasn't even close, the LS1 beat the pants off the 396 in every catagory, acceleration, top speed, handling, comfort...
