Millenia Ignition Problem

I have a 1995 Millenia... great car, but... sometimes I cannot turn the key in the ignition. I suspect it has something to do with the locking mechanism on the steering column, but I am reluctant to take it apart. The wheel does not seem to lock firmly in place. I can start with my remote starter and then I can use the key as presumably the locking mechanism is released... any ideas?
