What kind of increase in HP if any will an MSD ignition system give a 97 SOHC.

None. The MSD system maximizes your ignition system. It gives you smoother idle, better launches and so on.

i have seen some vehicles gain power with an MSD ignition, however, they tended to be older distributor vehicles with crappy ignition systems. modern coilpack cars already have good ignition systems, so an improvement isnt as big

hey im looking into getting the msd sytem also. if you could let me know if it runs smoothly and how hard it was to install. from what i hear you need to upgrade your spark wires to 8.5 mm before an upgrade ignition system. i could be wrong though. just something to throw out there.

Unless you have alot of mods that would justify the MDS ignition system, stick with the stock system. It works fine. If on the other hand you are going to put in cams, cam gears, header, turbo, nitrous and/or other stuff then then the MSD ignition system would be ideal.
