Good Masking tape

Hello Friends

I am Marco a new member from Italy.I have a quastion for you:I am searching a very good masking tape to mask cars bodies when I paint them.I have one but that is really bad,it dameges always the paint when I remove it so I was looking for another one that don't damage the paint.

I was looking for Tamiya masking.What do you think?Is it good?

Anoter question.How can I do to show the attachment in the forum?My profile says that I can't show attachment like images.What I have to do??

Welcome! Tamiya is the best masking tape ive ever used and i thing most others on the forum will agree. not sure what your asking with the other question. but what i think you mean is the rule about attachments, yes you can add pics to your post, no you cant add attachments like script or others that can be encoded with spyware, viruses etc... standard stuff here.

you could probably use 3m masking tape for cars but that might peel off some paint, its very good for RC car bodies, not sure about model cars.

Lexan paints are a lot easier on tape adhesive than the kinds of paint we use on car models, while SOME 3M tapes like the automotive ones are more than up to the task, I still prefer to use Tamiya tape for the sake of reliability.

Hi and welcome!!

I can only steal Freakmech's post above and agree that you should use only Tamiya tape if it is at all possible for you to get. It is by far and away the best and most versatile tape IMHO.
You can use plastic bags, kitchen food wrap or silver foil to mask off large areas (car bodies) and use that Tamiya tape only where needed if you want to save tape and money.

For doing VERY fine masking of small, thin details (radio faces, window trims) I can also recommend Bare Metal Foil. It seems expensive but if you only use it for small and thin pieces it will last a ver long time and because it is sooooo thin and flexible it allows you to mask things that it is really hard to do with regular masking tape.

There is a very limited capacity of the AF server so if you will be posting a lot of pictures set up an account for yourself with Image Shack (free) etc.

Tamiya is the best. might sound expensive (geez 3$) but really worth it. Nothing more frustrating that bleeding paint because we were cheap on the tape.

Tamiya's 40mm.
Why 40mm? It's the most transparent and the most thin in the line.
You can see clearly when using it, unlike the 5mm 10mm and what-not.
There is also less chance of having a 'ledge' between 2 paints when using the 40mm.

1 roll of 40mm can last me 2-10 models depending on how much masking is needed.

I'm going to go against the grain here and swear by 3m masking tape. It's probably more readily available than Tamiya, even in Italy, and it works great. I buy it in the 2in width and cut it to the width I want to use it in. I like to use a 2mm or so strip to mask around the edges of stuff, then use a thicker piece of tape over the thinner strip to do mask the rest. I do this because I can burnish it down really well for 2mm and I can also follow contours easily. Also, worth mentioning, I lay my tape down on glass when I cut it to width before applying it to the model. This helps avoid pulling up underlying paint.

I was working on a beautiful VW Vanagon/Bus T3 and I was doing in bicolor like the first produced during 80s.When I remove the bad mask that I have, it damaged the body and I had to stripp the paint with brake fluid to clean the body ready to be re-painted

Now I will buy surely the Tamiya!!!!!!!!!!

Do you know how can I use to do the red and black cable in a engine of plastic models?I saw beautiful model on AF and I was use!!!!

Much cheaper is just to use all different kinds and sizes of wires from telephones and so on. Best sizes go form 0.20mm t0 about 2mm

Tamiya tape is very good. I use Baremetal foil to get really sharp edges and some time artist frisk film. A liquid masking agent can also be very usefull on occasions.
