more power!!!

has anyone replaced the clutch fan with a electric fan and got noticable power gain? trying to get a few more ponies out of my 3.0l

More than likely you won't notice any power gain at all. The fan clutch on your truck will disengage when the radiator is cold and will just freewheel. When the t-stat opens up, hot water will flow the radiator and the hot air flowing thru will engage the fan to cool the water. The electric fan will probably not get you anywhere. Probably the best upgrades will be exhaust, intake, power chip/programmer, and rear/front gears

My 3 point slow seems a little smoother after installing a permanent (KN) air filter. Not a big difference but it's probably worth the 40 bucks, especially since disposable filters are around 15 each.

Does your K&N filter have a fabric filter element inside? My SIL installed one, swears he installed all that was shipped to him.

After a few thousand miles the engine light came on. The MAF sensor was loaded with dust ... as was the entire intake. The K&N filter was nothing more than a fine mesh wire screen. We went back to OEM filter arrangement.

I'm thinking there must have been something left out at manufacturing, or installation, of the K&N.

Mine looks okay. Pretty much like a standard filter except with more durable materials. I've put 15k on it so far with no problem. I was kind of suspicious of the permanent filter concept, but did some research and it seems the KN company has a good reputation. The OEM filters for mine cost 15 bucks apiece and need to be replaced every 10k, so the permanent filter could save a couple hundred $ over the life of the vehicle. So if I get even a fraction more horsepower, it seems a pretty good deal.

i like K&N. i have one on everythign i own and i clean and re-oil em about ever 4-5 months depending on whats going on. anyway, most clutch fans dont really engage unless its hot and/or youre idling a lot. otherwise going down the road the air flowing through the radiator does a sufficient job of cooling. runnin an e-fan is probably not a bad idea. you MIGHT get a couple ponies vs an engaged clutch fan but nothing more at any other time. another good thing is theyre usually more efficient (puller type) than a clutch fan and *REALLY* come in handy when things are getting very hot.
