Hi, I looked through some other fourms on this issue and just want some clarification. Today when i was downshifting to fourth coming off of the highway, it was very very difficult to get the car into fourth gear. Then it went to fourth fine after that, a little while later, while in fourth it started making a loud whine, i shifted to third and it was fine... went back to fourth a little while later it was working fine. I have no problems in any other gears. So what is or could it be? The car is a 1996 Accord Lx 5spd with 230,000kms so..143,000mi er around there i think. thanks for any advice.

Re: Transmission Problem
Just another thing i noticed, i can go from 3rd to 4th with no problem, but when im going from 5th to 4th, i cant get the shifter into 4th without going from 5th, to 3rd then to fourth, i can't just go from 5th to 4th.

Re: Transmission Problem
don't mean to thread hijack...but since this is about trans problems
I've got a 93 Accord automatic sometimes...but not always.. at low speeds (like in a parking lot or coasting to a stop sign) I hear/feel a grinding noise. I'm guessing during the downshift from 2nd to first, based on the speed (less than 15MPH). any ideas? |

Re: Transmission Problem
Well i figured out the problem somewhat, it wouldnt' go into gear casue there was barely any fluid left...whoops... it's all leaking out where the axel goes into the tranny on the passengers side.. is there a seal inside there or something that can be fixed?

Re: Transmission Problem
Yes there is an axle seal there. The axle is held in with a snap ring ... you pop it out with a hard jerk. One thing ... there is not stop for the seal to bottom out on. It should be flush with the face of the diff. Be sure not to drive it in too deep or it will get destroyed. Also be sure it's not cocked at an angle.

Re: Transmission Problem
It was the axel seal, replaced that now it's working fine again

Re: Transmission Problem
Unless you are racing stop downshifting. It is a whole lot cheaper (and easier) to replace brake pads than a transmission.

Re: Transmission Problem
Ya also mixed an automatic trans problem with a manual trans problem!
And if anyone else is reading....stop downshifting is bad advice. |
