Hey guys,
Just wondering if anyone know how to get the crankshaft pulley off. Im working on a 97 mazda 626 that has a 2.0L engine. (All that i wanted to do was change the leaky water pump, obviously the idiots at mazda think i need to tear the whole car apart just to change it) Is there a special tool that bolts into the two holes? Ive tried using strap wrenches, but nothing can hold the torque. Thanks for your help. -Rob

Re: Help! How do i get the crank pully off?
yeah... you'll have to remove the timing belt, valve cover, and p/s pump to get the water pump out.
to get the crank pulley out you have to remove the 21mm bolt in it's center. an impact gun is preferable as it will speed it right off.... if you don't have access to one a chain wrench will do. there is also a special tool that you can bolt to it (in those two threaded holes you're talking about)... just off the top of my head.... if it's a manual transaxle you can leave it in gear with the wheels on the ground to help hold the crank still while you loosen the crank pulley... once the bolt it out you can usually wiggle the pulley off by hand, or by using a standard puller. two prybars gently on the back can work also, just be careful to not bend any teeth on the pulley. |

Re: Help! How do i get the crank pully off?
hey thanks for you input!
sorry i forgot to post back and let everyone know i got it off. Yeah, i should have thought of putting it in gear (although ive always heard thats not necessarily good to do) but i stumbled across another website that suggested that and the dumb thing is off now. i must say for the record, i hate fords and imports. wow, mazda is both..... must be why i cant stand working on it! (only reason i am is that the lady who owns it only has this one car, and 5 kids to go with it. so needless to say im helpin her out with a waterpump replacement, along with timing belt, pulleys, etc.) peace and chicken grease -Rob
