Re: intake manifold
Dealer charged $618.63 for part in 06/2005. This did not include labor And new plugs & wires. But the grand total for complete job was $1295.76 plus sales tax.

Re: intake manifold
Failure of these is common to the point that police vehicles were covered under an extended warranty. There is also a class action suit that your car is about two years too old to be included in.

The manifold that failed in 06/2005 was a replacement for the one that failed in 11/2000. I filed at dealer 12/2005 for reinbursment on the one that failed in 11/2000. Waiting on check from Ford. They would only pay on the one that failed in 2000 , due to 7 year ruling by court.

Re: intake manifold
to my understanding an all aluminum intake does not exist for our 95-97 mgms. the only difference is the new replacements have an aluminum crossover for the coolant. the guy i bought mine from had the intake changed before i bought it and that is 60,000 miles later and no probs, knock on wood!

Re: intake manifold
When I heard about the class action suit I put a new waterpump on the wifes 98 GS just to make me feel better. She is about to turn 100000 miles and I have her slotted for a new Marquis in about two years. I hope she makes it. I remember the sales pitch about the "fail safe" cooling system that allows you to drive the car with no coolant without engine damage. I don't think I will be testing this system.

Re: intake manifold
I just purchased a '97 with 78K on the 'meter. Do these go bad after a certain number of miles? Is there anything I should be doing to keep this from happening? Is it caused from overheating or do they just randomly go bad?
Just today I had a friend tell me about someone he knows that had this problem. The dealership wanted about $1500. to fix it. They found a local garage that did it for less than half the price. |

Re: intake manifold
They just randomly go bad. It was a defect. There is nothing you can to to prevent it. Mine was replaced at 40K miles. Maybe you can go to a mercury dealer and they can check to see if it was replaced. They will either check the part # (Barcode)or go into their computer system with your VIN#. At least you might be able to have peace of mind if it was.
