valve cover ventilation and pcv
I am still having issues with my PCV. Explanations have fallen short of helping me to understand which way the valve is meant to go into the intake manifold. It's probably my being dense that I'm not getting it? Could somebody please try to explain it again for the sake of my thick skull?
On a related note, I want to talk about the valve cover ventilation. This is a hose that bows sludge or oil out of the crankcase. The same hose is connected to the PCV. Is this sludge meant to blow through the PCV and into the intake manifold, or is it meant to go to the air cleaner? Three years ago, I drove home from Victoria to Edmonton. A 16 hour trip that took me through the mountains. It was quite cold, -20 C/ -29F. I didn't notice any problems on the way home, but in the morning there was no oil in the crankcase or oilpan. I took it to a mechanic and they found two things wrong. They said that the valve cover hose had plugged with ice as a result of moisture from ? The plug caused both cam and crank seals to break and leak. There was not much oil left on my parking space. It must have been on the Yellowhead highway. Guess I'm lucky it was so cold or I would have baked my engine. The mechanic cut the valve cover hose so that it now ventilates to the atmosphere and sprays lovely goop on my intake manifold. I know there are cans to catch this shit, but since we have winter here for 8 months a year, I don't want to take a chance freezing it again. Oh, and the hose back into the air cleaner is plugged. Anybody ever seen this sort of thing? Do you have any suggestions? Do you know which way my PCV vavle goes? Any help is always appreciated. Jai |
