ford 1953 problem

Im thinking of buying a 1953 f series truck .....but it has problems
its a cheep truck the thing is some times it seems to be stuck in reverse and drive at the same time im just wondering if anyone no's if its a simple project to repair when im under the vehical and i push the middle rod forward on the back end of the gearbox its fine but when i go through the gears it seems to pull the middle rod back then it jams and wont drive just stalls but dosent judder forward nor backwards was thinking of putting a spring on the middle gear lever to the front of the motor to stop the lever coming back

any idears on this subject ???? or email me on [email protected] thanks ppl

Re: ford 1953 problem

Sounds to me like a linkage problem or gear synchronizer problem.

Only you will be able to determine your fix on this one. A 1953 Ford truck could have a 1977 Granada transmission in it, is it original? I restored a 1951 Ford and it was “fly by the seat of your pants”. I suggest searching online for an antique Ford parts site. They might could help or maybe they would have a forum, blog.

Re: ford 1953 problem

This is most likely a linkage/shifting tube problem. Put everything in neutral, and disconnect the shift rods from the trans. Operate the shift arms on the trans, through all the gears. If it shifts in and out of gear ok, and the detents are holding in position ok, its probably just the linkage. Replace all the grommets/bushings in the linkages. If the rods/holes that the rods go into, are worn, either replace them, or try to fabricate bushings to get rid of the slack. Adjust everything to the neutral position of the trans. The shift tube that goes through the steering column, and the shifting mechanism, may be damaged. Fixing them is not a big problem, finding parts may be. The quickest solution, if adjusting the linkages doesnt help, is to install a floor shifter. Of course if you want to keep it original, be careful about cutting holes in the floorboard. Either way, you need to fix it before you drive it. If it goes in 2 gears at one time while youre moving, it can damage the trans. If you decide not to buy it, let me know where it is!! lol Good luck
