how do you reset the check engine light on a 2000 sport?

You need a scan tool. The scan tool will also reveal the trouble codes that are responsible for the light.

You can usually take it to a auto parts store (like AutoZone) who will read the codes for free and reset your light.

Bear in mind, if you don't fix the problem, the light will turn on again.
