coil pack

V-6, 164k miles

How does a bad coil pack react? Does it miss intermittently or go out completely?

Thanks

On my 2002 duretec, my ignition coil went bad on only 2 of the six coils which all six are all one unit. So, yes, it can miss on only some plugs.

Good Luck,

Re: coil pack

My 1998 SHO has the Coil on Plug (CoP) setup where there are no plug wires, there is a coil mounted on top of each spark plug. I've had two coils go bad, and they were intermittant. Some days I'd notice a miss at idle, other days I wouldn't.

If you have a coil with a crack in the casing, you may find that the coil has to get warm before it starts to miss. Maybe the crack spreads as the plastic expands when warm, causing the spark to find a lower resistance path to ground. If it's humid out, it would find a path through the crack even more readily.

You may also notice a miss only at idle or only under heavy load as well. So, yeah, it is possible for a bad coil to cause a miss intermittently, depending on how you "define" intermittent.
