Possible Tranny problem

I have a Ford Taurus 89. I bought with only 30000 miles on it and I have put an additional 21000 miles on it. A month ago I was driving up a hill. and when I slowed down and stopped at the end of the hill, I pressed the gas and turned. The car lost a ton of power with a big thump. Almost a stall but I still had enough power to move it to the side of the road. I placed the car in park(its an auto) and then placed it in drive and it started up just fine and ran smoothly. This happened several times and i would have to place the car in park or reverse and then place it in drive. I took it to my mechanic and he replaced everything including the fuel pump. I just pulled into my drive way I lost power again. I did the same thing as I stated before and it started up just fine and I drove it around and up a hill again and I had no problems. Plus, I noticed that my needle that shows how hot the car is running was moving past normal towards the hot side. My question is my car's transmission dying? Please someone help!!

You say you took it to your mechanic and replaced a bunch of stuff.

Did the mechanic diagnose anything or just start throwing parts on it?

If he just threw parts at it, you need to take it to a qualified shop and have diagnostics done to the car.

Re: Possible Tranny problem

Thanks for getting back to me. I had to replace the fuel pump, mounts, some belts and the transmission had a leak. Now my mechanic told me he checked the transmission and it looked ok. Should I go to a transmission shop and have them do the diagnosis? Really do appreciate the help.

now you say the transmission had a leak, but the transmission looked ok to a mechanic, did he pull it apart and check it out or did he just replace the bad seal and put it back on?

Re: Possible Tranny problem

He replaced the seal. That was a month ago and he just replaced the the fuel pump on Tuesday at which time he checked the transmission and he stated it looked fine. Thank you for the help.
