Question Reading computer codes

I have a 1996 Cavalier 2.2L. with the engine light on. Can anyone tell me how to get the problem codes? It is a slow read from the dash or an OBDII thing? If so what type of code reader do I need to buy. Thanks.

im pretty sure the 96 is obdII, you can take it to almost any auto parts store and theyll read/clear the codes for free
