engine speed
Hi, everybody,
I am a new memeber here. I bought my 02 silver G20 (5 spds) with sport package about 2 months ago and glad to find many G20 drivers here. I have some small questions about engine. Here are three: 1. What is your idle speed? Mine is around 900-1000. Is it too high? I checked the manual and label under the hood, and can't find any specific number. 2. During normal driving how fast do you run your engine, 3K rpm? 4K rpm? I found it is too slow to shift around 2.5K to 3K, but afraid to rev it too high. 3. Do you and when do you switch to synthetic oil? Thanks. |

Hi there and welcome. Typical idle speed is around 500-700 rpm, though this varies with the weather. If you're still breaking in your engine (within the 1st 5k miles or so) I would say don't rev any higher than you are currently. Once the break-in is over, you're welcome to rev clear up to redline, though I wouldn't recommend that every shift. Power peak is around 4800 I believe, so any higher than about 5500 isn't necessary. I haven't a clue about the oil. I'm jealous of your tranny! Oh, would that I had a stick-shift!

FSM recommendations for idle speed: 800 +/- 50 but I have a P10 which still had the high-port engine, so I don't know if yours will be different. It shouldn't be far off, though.
I'd go w/Boingo on keeping the revs somewhat down during your break-in period. I would try not to go too far over about 4k for the time being. You ought to be able to shift w/o problems at about 3k so that in the next higher gear it will be running about 2k which is where I usually leave my rpm's during regular/non-strenuous driving. After atleast 5000 miles are on your car, then you can try running the engine to it's higher potential. Mine tends to like going up as far as 6000 w/o any real trouble. For changing to synthetic: You might just wanna wait until you have finished your "break-in" period before changing over. So maybe at the 6k mark you can change it. Another idea that worked well when I made the switch was to use a syn blend for the first step, and then I went to the full syn the time after so that it had time to sort of adjust to running on the more viscous fluid. Just a suggestion. Again, I have a slightly different engine from you, so things may be a bit different. Not to mention that I started on a used engine. I hope I was able to help atleast a little bit!

Boingo, Saturntangerine,
Thanks for your suggestions. I will ask my dealer to check the idle speed. I think it is a little high. Yes my car only has about 2K miles, so I will be careful from now on. I think I reached 4K rpm a couple of times, and also had a little hard acceleration on high way for passing a few times. Reached 90 mph a few times. Hope it will be fine. I originally thought the break-in would end at 1K. Another thing which bothers me a little is a small noise I noticed when I lift my foot off gas pedal after acceleration. It sounds like a small spring/bell vibrating. In order to hear it I have to tune off radio and pay attention to it. It happens after the engine warmed up. Sorry for so many questions. I guess I am a little paranoid. ^_^ This is my first new car. Thanks. |

I have a semi-synth oil in mine, that is used as standard at the Nissan dealership I get serviced at. I would assume then it's what Nissan UK (possibly europe) would recommend.
