2003 TOWNCAR Trunk problem
The relay in the door closes but the trunk will not open or close. The trunk opens with the key. When trunk is closed manually it frequentl does not close the last inch or so. Pressing the remote several times activates the pull down motor and closes the trunk.
The trunk light seemed to go out at the same time (not sure). The Lincoln Dealer first said it was the pull down motor but when I pointed out the pull down motor works he said it must be the "Module". $300 for the module, $200 for instalation. I don't think that is the problem and believe it might be associated with the safety feature that won't let the trunk close remotely if there is an obstruction in the way. Your thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Boyd |

Re: 2003 TOWNCAR Trunk problem
Do you know if the trunk has ever accidently been slammed shut? I know that will always be a cause for a module to be damaged.

Re: 2003 TOWNCAR Trunk problem
I am sure it has been slammed several times. I know the oull down motor works. When it is closed manually the pull down motor closes it the last inch.
Where is the module located????? |

Re: 2003 TOWNCAR Trunk problem
It should be under the trunk carpet right where the latch is..if not there, then underneath the trunk lid itself connected to the latch up top.

Re: 2003 TOWNCAR Trunk problem
Hello boydee,
I apologize in advance if this is a little too basic, but are you sure your 2003 TC has the full "all the way up / all the way down" feature? Lincoln describes this as "full power deck lid" vs the "power deck lid pull down". Both operate from either the door switch or the remote fob. I don't know which model you have, but in 2003 the fully functional trunk came with the Cartier package or the Signature with the Limited Edition package (54L). It wasn’t available at all on an Executive. Otherwise you have a trunk release and the last inch or so pull down. I know this has been a point of confusion for many users in the past. Best of luck on a resolution, PantherFan

Re: 2003 TOWNCAR Trunk problem
Thank you for your reply.
Actually, this is the full up/down trunk and it worked well for more than 2 years. There is a safety device that, when the trunk is open and there is something sticking up in the trunk and you try to close the trunk remotely, it will automatically and instantly re-open. I suspect that feature is defective, however, I don't know where it is located. Also, the trunk lights don't work. The fuses are OK. Thank you, Boyd Creech |

Then there is no doubt that it should work. Quote:
Maybe this will help. It's a bit confusing and hard for me to follow, but here is the text from the Principles of Operation of the Luggage Compartment Lid Module: "The luggage compartment lid module receives a voltage signal from the driver door module (DDM) when either the button on the driver door trim panel, the keyless entry keypad, or the transmitter is pressed (Twice on the transmitter). Voltage is then supplied to the luggage compartment lid latch, opening it. There are two switches in the latch. One is mounted by the luggage compartment lid module to sense if the latch is closed. The other switch in the latch is monitored by both modules (Lighting Control Module (LCM) and luggage compartment lid module) and is used for disabling the anti-theft system, which is contained within the LCM. The luggage compartment lid module powers the lid motor to move the lid to the fully open position when it senses the latch has been opened. The basic troubleshooting flow goes on to say:
Good Luck, PantherFan

Re: 2003 TOWNCAR Trunk problem
Did you get your power trunk fixed?
I have a cartier with the same problem, it will not respond to the keypad or the remote or the button in the door. When I close it manually sometimes it will pull down but most of the time it will not, if I push the remote button sometimes it will pull the lid down. The power lift and close function do not work at all. Any help would be appreciated mine is out of warranty but only has 16000 miles on it, and the nearest dealer is 165 miles away, they are a small dealer and do not have an electrical tech working there. Thanks in advance, I did pull the trunk stuff out and checked all the connections and the ground by the trunk switch and removed the rear seat and check the one behind it. 2003 Cartier 16387 miles |

Re: 2003 TOWNCAR Trunk problem
I have a similar problem with my 2003 Cartier which has a fully automatic trunk open/close. There is no manual or key alternative. I have pushed down the trunk manually, as I have done normally, when it will pick up the lid and pull down to fully closed. I have somehow missed the first notch and picked up the second and the lid is about 1 inch from fully closed. There are a lot of clicks when I push the remote devices (3) but the unit will not release nor fully close.
Can someone tell me what can be done to reset the unit. Access to the trunk from behind the seat is not possible. There is a "module" behind the seat back, but I dont know if it is the one. It seems that you should be able to release the locking mechanism in case of such a situation. I would certainly appreciate any help on this matter. I shudder to think what would happen if a child had got in there or something unable to pull the release. |
