fixing creaks in stairs

does anyone know how to fix squeaky wooden stairs? i just wanna know what i'm getting into before i pull the carpet up, cuz my house is driving me insane.

If it was me though, I'd just replace them, and put thin strips of rubber where the step meets up to the framing, then it cushions it a bit. I'd go with the shoe nailing though from opposite angles, that usually won't allow the stair to move.

yea, try pushing some shims between the stair and framing, then cutting it to size. (saw it on some show once.)

The powder gives the wood lubrication and stops the squeaking. To fix it permanently, slide wooden shims under the stair treads and then secure them in place with nails or screws. This will take the movement out of the tread and stop the squeak.

And .... put construction glue on both sides of the shims first. Then screw them in on an angle into the side boards with long screws.

if you do end up tearing up the carpet, put a 1/4 inch of soft foam under the new carpet, that'll give your carpet a squishy cushion so it's nice to walk on
