E39 Touring Tailgate Glass problem - help pls!

I have a 525i sport touring and recently the rear glass screen is not opening. In fact, the switch doesn't respond when pressed.

I have also had a faulty rear washer hose which was not fitted properly so water was leaking into the interior - perhaps this has caused the fault.

Anyway, took the car into a BMW dealer today, they have had a quick check in the tailgate and said the switch is not the problem and suggested a wiring problem which could cost me upto 4 hours of labour. Here in the UK, that's expensive.

Has anyone seen this problem before? And is there anything I can do to check to see if the switch on the tailgate is working or not?

Thanks in advance.

Ken

Wow, how did you shatter it??? I've decided to get the switches and wiring inspected by a friend of a friend who is an ex-BMW mechanic. See if he can find anything obvious that could be the problem. So your new window came with new wiring??? Hmmmm.......£50. How did you shatter it again???

Hi Ken i managed to shatter the window by pressing on the windscreen wiper as sometimes this freed up the catch holding the glass, it was quite spectacular in tescos car park !!. The wiring on the tailgate of these cars is notorious for getting caught and causing all sorts of problems with the electrics.
