Questions- HP Gains
Hi All,
I'm confused. OBDI has HP gains of 5-20hp with a Cat-back installed depending on the setup. This is information from what I gathered around the internet. Now, OBDII has HP gains of 2-8Hp with a Cat-back. Is this true? Why the difference? I don't understand the difference between OBDI and OBDII. The only thing that I know about it is that there is 2 oxygen sensors in OBDII equipped vehicles. Some Tech information will be great. Thanks. Regards, Spotovi

the thing with OBDII is that it has more sensors to keep emissions even lower than the OBDI did, so the more sensors to control emissions and stuff, then the less the HP you will gain through the speed parts added.

Thanks for the info.
Is there anything that I can do to bypass these controls and still be within legal tolerences? I guess reprogramming will do the trick right, will it be that simple? Regards, Spotovi

i don't think so.....the sensors send signals to the ecu to adjust shit....A/F ratio and stuff like that....if you bypass those, the ecu will probably just richen out the mixture to prevent detonation.....and that will make your emissions be very bad.....so i think you'll just have to live w/ it.....

you may be able to tune it so it runs better than it currently would run, maybe using the HonData system, but those are pricey.
you will prolly end up having to live with it.

get a OBD II - OBD I harness and run an OBD I ecu, then you will have less codes you have to worry about and more hp gains. Just make sure you get the right ecu. good luck. stefan525

Thanks stefan525. I'll look into it. However I have a feeling that if I change the OBDII system to OBDI the car will not pass the emissions here in Hamilton, Ontario. The system is set for the year of the car etc and if OBDII systems have lower emissions then they will expect my car to be within those same tolerences. I'm just guessing though and it will be a point that I have to research before I get started with something like that.
I understand that the ECU is a control device etc, but for discussion, if I where to take the fuse for the ECU out and run the car without an active ECU will I have a bump in HP? Regards, Spotovi

No. Your ECU is the brain of the car. It figures out air/fuel mixture, reads the imputs from the O2 sensors, delivers imputs to the fuel injectors, etc. So you need your ECU in order to be able to run your car. good luck. stefan525

yeah if u disconnect the ECU ur car wont even turn on.
you may be able to get a chipped ecu that helps to gain HP.
