Question Instrument cluster

Well i have to face a hard decision. my bloody speedo cable snaped again today while i was working and this is the 6th time i replace it in 5 months and i am sick and tired of it.

Now i was wondering if there is a way to swap my GMC safari 89 cluster into my 87 Astro van, that of course by swaping the magnet sensor off the tranny and putting into mine. is the connection are the same meaning like for the temp, fuel, oil pressure and volt gauge? are they the same than the 87 Astro? what needs to be done other than taking the wire from the sensor into mine?

is it possible?

like my dash:

My connection:

Gmc's Connection

if there is a way, please let me know as i am rather sick and tired to replace that darn cable every month and the worse of it all, is that nothing is in it's way, not even kinked

That is so retarded. i have a radar detector, but it won't be of any use if i don't know how fast i am going and might get caught speeding at 140 km/hr without noticing it.

Re: Instrument cluster

I think it might be at least partially possible. Have you considered just swapping the speedometer and sensor? I wouldn't count on the other gages working correctly, but I think the gear on the trans output shaft for the speedo is essentially the same.
One way to find out is pull the tail housing on the two transmissions and count the teeth on the gears. If they are the same count, and the rear axle ratios are the same, you are good to go.

Re: Instrument cluster

a follow up: If the gears are not the same, you can get the rotor ring for the shaft at eatmyshifts.com for 7 bucks. cut'n'paste this link http://www.eatmyshifts.com/pl_700r4.htm and scroll almost all the way to the bottom of the page

Re: Instrument cluster

off mine? it is a 32 teeth, as of the Gmc i think it is the same as it was serviced 6 months before i bought my Astro.

As of my gauges? they have to work as i rely on them especially for the temp as i am on propane as you can see part of my tank in the picture and i need to know if it is over heating. in winter, i put a 95 degrees C and summer is about 70 degrees. if i leave the old one in there for summer? the coolant will over heat big time. So i need to know if the temp is normal for my engine for summer or winter. voltage is the less i can care of as my radar detector can give me a voltage of my battery, oil pressure? lol once i hear the click sounds of my rockers? means needs oil pretty bad. LMAO

Anybody has a schematic of it so i know what colors of wires i need to pull out for my cluster? anything i should be aware before doing anything?

not only for me, but maybe for others too that are sick and tired to change their cable!!!!!

thanks

Re: Instrument cluster

Yep that's what I was saying, leave the other gages alone and just trade out the speedometer.
