Someone wants to buy my 91 jeep cherokee laredo 4.oL. But they asked me if I knew what transfer case is in it. Does someone happen to know? It is all stock. A standard work jeep.

Is it Command Trac or Selec-Trac? There are 2 or 3 of each kind. There should be a metal tag on the case to the left of the rear output shaft with the model number and manufacturer stamped on it.

Easiest thing to do is look at the shifter. If its got a postion for fulltime 4X4, its a Selectrac (NP242). If it doesnt have fulltime 4X4, its a Commandtrac(NP231J)

Command Trac could be a New Process 207 or New Process 231. Selec-Trac could be a New Process 228, 229, or 242.

Thanks for the info Ray H. Then if it's a Comand Trac you know it has to be a 231 and a Selec-Trac has to be a 242. Would the other transfer case models interchange, say a 231 for a 207 or vice versa?
