3.5L Montero engine swap????

Hey, I've been researching about mitsubishi engines, is it possible for a 3.5L Montero engine to bolt into a 3000GT????
I did find some hints that this is possible, but no actual tech listings from someone who has done it or seen someone do it.
I was particularly curious about the DOHC montero into an SL DOHC 3KGT.

Any info will be GREATLY APPRECIATED...........................Thanks.

Re: 3.5L Montero engine swap????

damn...thats alot of custom work. I would love to drop in a 3.5 or a stroked-out 4.1, but thats so far over my head lol. Looks so good though.

Re: 3.5L Montero engine swap????

Hey, Thanks alot talskinyguy, I'm not looking to swap out the motor, just trying to figure something else out, I love my 3.0L motor, and I'm going to keep it.
Hey, by the way, is the 3.0L SL motor the same as the VR-4 motor, or does the VR-4 have a couple of extra internal fortification?

The DOHC 6g72 engine is the same as the VR4 6g72 twin turbo engine but it has a few differences internally. The turbo engine has 8.0:1 compression and the N/A engine comes with 10.0:1 compression pistons. Other then the pistons the turbo has a four bolt main for 2nd gen and up I think but not the non turbo engines, only a 2 bolt for those so they arent as strong but they dont have as much horsepower. They have other things like oil pump, thermostat housing, and different fuel system. If you want to convert your non turbo to turbo it is possible and many have done it.

Re: 3.5L Montero engine swap????

Crap!! So how reliable is a 2 main bolt opposed to the 4 main bolt? What would it sacrifice in terms of power and reliability? This I'm asking so that I don't forget and go over board with upgrades only to come and blow the engine and ruin other stuff while I'm at it.
and also, how much can the SL stand with it's stock internals before requiring fortification?................let's face it, it's no JZ-GTE motor, but a cool 350hp would do for a short while while I try to gather funds for a future TT motor swap.
For now to keep costs down, I'll keep the SL engine though, I just got the damn car.

Thanks for all the help.

Re: 3.5L Montero engine swap????

IPO put down mid 500 FWHP on a 2 bolt main with 8:1 TT pistons.

Re: 3.5L Montero engine swap????

I've got a 99 SL, Auto, once I'm done with what I want fixed, I'll swap to Manual.
Cool, so atleast I can get 350hp reliably.
Thanks alot guys, that really shed some light.

93+ Twin Turbos are 4 bolt
91-92 Twin Turbos and 91-99 NA's are 2 bolt.

Re: 3.5L Montero engine swap????

OK, so which is which???? 4 or 2 main???? I'd have thought that Mitsu would have used the same motor in both the SL and VR-4 except for the pistons, which will need lower compression for a Turbo, but you never know, and what's my opinion worth anyway, I've only had the car for a week now .

Anyway, I'm thinking of swapping my 99 SL for a VR-4, unfortunately, I can't afford the 99 VR-4 , so I'll be forced to get a 95-98, and probably with alot more than 71K as mine has. Feel so sad, I liked the Big mouth bumper and the low miles , but the VR-4 has alot of goodies that will be a plus.

By the way, do all VR-$s have AWS (all wheel steering)? and if so, Is it a pain in the ass to remove it???? That's something I really don't want. But for the Active suspension, that I REALLY WANT, do they all come with it???

Sorry for all the questions, I know n00bies can be a pain in the @$$

It doesnt matter what you think mitsu should/would have done, this is what they did.

ECS went until mid 95 model year, it stopped sometime around the same time they went to the electric sunroof.

Removing the AWS doesnt save much weight, and doesnt matter much. The only real reason to remove it is if its leaking, or if you get ahold of a 95-96 stealth rear subframe that never had AWS.

Re: 3.5L Montero engine swap????

sorry for the wrong info, got it from Stealth316.com, "All DOHC 6G72s manufactured after June 1992 have a 4-bolt main bearing cap girdle.."

an i thought your 3k was DOHC for some reason...sorry bout that man

i did manage to stumble on a 2-bolt to 4-bolt conversion procedure...and it doesnt look all that hard. You may want to check it out

Re: 3.5L Montero engine swap????

Cool, thanks for the feedback, I think I've got 80% of it figured out, guess I should have done my research a lot more than I did. Anyway, it's settled, now I've got to find me a low mileage un-abused VR-4................ anyone has one??????
