Question Troubleshoot w/o MIL Light...

Hey,

'88 XJ Cherokee Laredo 4.0L Auto 4WD. Running well.

After reading about early XJ's having no MIL Light just a Check Engine Light and that this system won't throw any codes with the key on/off sequence how would you advise I go about troubleshooting w/o DRB II?

I also read someone else was using a different scanner that worked don't recall the make but it was far cheaper than the $1500 for the DRB II; more like $250.

1. Anyone know of a cheap scanner that will work with my '88 XJ?

2. If none, how can I troubleshoot w/o DRB II? Do I just disconnect each sensor one by one?

Thx, Phil

This link takes you directly to the Renix sensors but you can navigate to other systems as well. You'll find the testing and replacement procedures for all of the sensors. Just go through them one by one. You can't just "disconnect" because some are needed to start/run the engine. Bookmark this page for future reference.

You can find DRB II scanners on eBay for much less but getting them paired with the right cartidges can be a challenge. In the end, they only read the values at the diag ports which you can do with a DVM.

You should also get a Chiltons or Haynes manual and download the FSM from links previously provided.

With all of this, you'll find the answers to a lot of your future questions.
