Replace the head gasket or the head?

What should I do? Here's the whole story...
First: my heater core went - replaced that
Second: My ignition switch broke (because I forgot to unplug the wires when I dropped the steering column to change the heater core) - replaced that.
Third: Got the car started and it was running really hot - (I didn't think to replace the thermostat when I replaced the heater core) - after breaking a bolt getting the housing off - replaced that.
NOW: It seems the head gasket has blown or the head has been warped. I know it sounds crazy...but now I'm on a mission. I refuse to let this car win. It's no big deal, just a 93 wagon with a 1.9 engine. The thing is I had a new engine put in it last May (warranty has expired). Should I keep going or walk away? Is the head an easy thing to replace?
Thanks, Lila

Re: Replace the head gasket or the head?

Well, the good new's is that these little engine will go a long time for many miles...as long as you dont let it over heat. They have a rep of the head's cracking between the intake and exshaust valve if they are over heated.
After you verifly there is a problem with the head/gasket, I'd suggest to go ahead and pull the head and have it inspected. If it's bad then buy a used one from a junk yard.

Re: Replace the head gasket or the head?

Regardless, if you decide to only replace the gasket take it to a machine shop and have the head resurfaced. That will insure that it is true and not warped and the gasket and engine will last much longer.
