I get no response when turning the ignition key. The vehicle won't click, or make any electrical/starter noises what so ever. But, all the dash and operational systems do come-on. Every so often you can here a click at the selinoid on top of the starter. I,ve taken my veh. to the dealer twice. The charging system checks out O.K. The battery is new. The battery cables are clean and tight and there is no corrosion on the battery cables (I sliced the coating to check). When it does start there seems to be NO problem what-so-ever (the starter turns over just fine). Sometimes it will take 20-30 attempts to start the vehicle. Other times it will crank right over. Any Ideas on this? Could this be a Neutral safety switch? If so where is it located and how do you change one out? Could the ignition key/switch be worn-out? Or is the starter/selinoid worn-out. Any help would be apprieciated.
Thank You, Jim |

Since there is no sound or click at all, you might want to look at the starter relay, which, IIRC, is up under the dash on the passenger side.
FWIW YMMV |

Re: 2002 Camry, no ignition key response.
New twist. The vehicle has been starting within three trys. The other day I turned the key and the vehicle started first try, there was a noise like the starter was still engaged. I turned the ignition OFF but the starter kept triing to start the car! with the key off and out of the ignition. I put the key back in the ignition switch and after a few attempts to start/stop the engine the starter disengaged and the vehicle sounded/ran like normal. What gives? |

Re: 2002 Camry, no ignition key response.
I think you have 2 problems, both with your starter.
The first (where your car doesn't start) is the well known worn starter solenoid contacts problem. Do a search for "starter contacts" and read up on it. The second is your Bendix Drive in your starter is sticking in the forward position. It's not disengaging properly from the flywheel when you release the key. With both of these problems I think it's time to get a rebuilt starter or take your's out and have it professionally rebuilt. Look for an auto electrical shop in your area. Check the phone book. IMHO, I think you get a better rebuild quality from one of these rebuild shops than you do from the assembly line rebuilds sold at most auto parts stores. If only the auto parts rebuild is available in your area, then you have no choice but to do it that way. Mike |

Re: 2002 Camry, no ignition key response.
Mike,
Thanks for the Info. I'll pull the starter and have a look at it/have a place test it. Thanks again, Jim. |
