Arrow Update: Popping, Oil Filter, and Stuff

Hey all;
Just alittle update on my car with some problems I had earlier.

1) Last time I changed my oil, I posted that I couldn't get the oil filter off. I ended up denting it, and pretty much said 'screw it, ill do it next time.' I checked out the filter the next week, and it had expanded back to its original shape. I've notice little oil spots where I park in my driveway and at work, and decided to have a looksee under the car. Oil all over. I look at the filter, and where it had dented and popped back out, was a hole. A small one, but enough to drip.

So, I drained it and tried the filter. Again, it failed and only dented. I took a screw driver to it, broke it though, still nothing. I just made a bigger hole when trying to turn it. In the end, it took 2 hours to get off, but I did with the screw driver. So far, no drip, but I have to wait till the morning.

2) I posted awhile back about a popping noise from the block when I shut off the engine. Apparently, the oil filter had something to do with it because it gone.

So the moral is... change the oil filter. Don't damage it, then decide not to take it off. I'm lucky bc the hole was small and I didn't lose that much oil. That could have been fatal to the engine.

Tomorrow (if weather permits) Im going to install my SAFC. Got everything all set to go for the install. So wish me luck.

Glad your screw up didn't cost you your engine. Have fun with the install.

Re: Update: Popping, Oil Filter, and Stuff

I love to tinker with my car. So I am over-joyed to hop under the hood and fill and fix things sometimes.

Re: Update: Popping, Oil Filter, and Stuff

You may already know this trick, but smearing a little oil on the O-ring seal on the filter before you fill it full of oil and put it on will help it not to seize next time.

Re: Update: Popping, Oil Filter, and Stuff

I know that, and did it. The new one here I put alot of oil on the o-ring.

The one that got stuck was a STP. I usually use Bosch (like the new one), but I got it for free after rebates or something like that. I'm not one to be picky about the filters.

Re: Update: Popping, Oil Filter, and Stuff

Take note that when the surface of the 0-ring on the filter touch the opposing surface, then turn it 3/4 more...Also I decided to change my moms oil filter on her 03 expedition...took me 5 HOURS! The oil filter is not in a nice place like our 420A and it was seized like a bitch.

Make sure you use new oil when you put it on the seal. Kind of obvious, I know.

The screwdriver usually works for removal when all else fails.

I used a 12" 3/8ths extension once (slid it through the screwdriver's punched hole) when the screwdriver didn't provide enough mechanical advantage for my girls arms. That was messy.
