Rust on the undercarriage of my 1991 Civic
I’ve read posts about 4rth generation civics getting major rust on the panels, wheel wells, fenders, etc. But is it common for 1991 civics to have the under carriage rust out? It seems as though my 91 was undercoated better than a friend’s 88 civic. I have patch of rust on my undercarriage from driving over a parking island a few years back. But it’s one concentrated spot. Now that the body cancer is in, is my car done for? I’d like to think not. It’s my understanding that older japanese cars, around 1985?, would typically rust because they used cheaper steel. But since then honda used a better quality metal.
My car has other problems and I’m wondering whether or not to do some preventive maintenance. Or maybe it would be smarter to save my money to for the next car. And while I have your attention, is it difficult for a mechanic to put in a new five speed transmission? What would be a reasonable price for labor? 300$ I’ll appreciate all feedback, thanks. |

Re: Rust on the undercarriage of my 1991 Civic
Short answer: It depends.
Everyones perspective is different. One person "hopeless" basket case is no problem to someone else. Best thing I can suggest is post pictures, if not go around to a few bodyshops for their opinions on the condition on the body. If the body is truly rusted beyond repair (or safety) then just do the basics to keep the car as safe as possible and save up for a replacement car. If the body can be saved then again do the basics to keep the car safe and save up for the rust repairs. GL |
