'87 IROC issues
I havent been on here in forever, but ive got an issue with this 87 IROC im working on in my shop class. When we got it, i was put on the job because i have a '92 RS and was familiar with the car. But this one is a wreck.
The owners mustve tried to put the engine together with no directions or experience. Because they had bolts in all the wrong places, hoses not even attached, and fluids leaking all over the place. And every time we finish the thing, a new problem presents itself. This time, we are sooo close. I reattached all of the missing parts and fixed all the leaks, and replaced all of the crappy parts. Now ive got to tighten the belts back up and start it. So i did that. And it cranks and sounds like its going to start, but doesnt. We found one cable still detached and believe it to be the problem. But theres nowhere for it to go. Its in the area of the cable, but there are no open plugs. It looks like the connector for a sensor, but i dont know. With a green tip. So we're gonna try to figure it out and see what happens, but if you could give some suggestions that would be cool. Sorry i cant get any pictures of it. No camera on me. Anything you might need to know to single this out, just ask. Thanks guys -MIke |

Re: '87 IROC issues
87's were the last year of the carbs available. Additionally I was curiious seeing the condition of the car as described, they owner may have done the old heave ho to the EFI and slapped a carb on it becuase it didn't work right and they did'nt understand it.

87 LG4 carbed built in 04/87 it was the base engine for the IROC and z28; optional in other models anyway, as said before, we need more info on that connector

Re: '87 IROC issues
pictures would be great. If we could see the shape of the connector and its general location. Also check for vacuum leaks, timing, and everything having to do with the fuel system.

Well i actually found where it connected. It was to a connection sticking down from underneath the intake manifold. But it didnt affect running conditions.
We got it running, but not easily. It cranks and cranks, and after giving it enough gas and time, it will fire up and stay alive as long as you give it a continuous supply of gas. This one is fuel injected. We have a battery charger constantly attached to it for the amount of cranking it takes to get started. But its still not enough. Back when we first got it i found a huge hole in the side of the CAT and it looked like either it was punctured by something on the road (unlikely), but more realistically, it looks like it exploded from the inside. I think it might not be able to idle because it might not have enough back pressure.... but thats probably not the problem. We checked the plugs, and theyre fine. The timing is definately waaaaaay off, but we cant adjust the timing until we can get it to idle on its own. Right? Any ideas why this thing is so ??

Re: '87 IROC issues
ok, sounds like you're in the same boat that I am right now with mine. Which on mine I'm pretty well down to the wierdest ignition control module failure I have ever encountered. Since my distributer is not the greatest and being an '85 3 of the 4 cap bolts have now broke in the base, I'm going to the swap meet this weekend, getting a dizzy and see what gives, becase mine also will not attempt to do didley unless the timing is rediculously off, it will catch idle up then die. On a few rare occasions I've gotten it to run but won't drive for than a few hundred feet before acting up again.
From my understanding the ICM signal is the basis for the injector pulsing. I'll let you know if the swap works out, obviously. |

Re: '87 IROC issues
If its sticking down underneath the plenum you mean? If it is then that is the intake air temp sensor. I think that helps the computer calculate the amount of fuel. I would look at you map sensor(unless you have a maf) and the vacuum lines to it and the temp sensor to the computer. Those would keep the car from continuously running. Could also check the idle scew in case the previous owner messed with that. Check fuel pressure and make sure the pressure regulator is getting vacuum.
just spewing ideas. hope it helps

We adjusted the timing on it today as best we could while just cranking it. That should bring us to somewhere close to TDC. As is, the distributor is in the best spot if thing has a shot of starting.
So im gonna check all those suggestions you guys gave and get back to you in the next few days. -Mike |
