Ball Joints

I've read a few peoples comments throughtout the site about recalled ball joints. Where can u go online to see if your car qualifies??? Had my car almost three years now, and just replaced the hub bearings, was told ball joints are going, so would be nice to know. Also, anyone know how much it costs to fix the Valve cover gaskets??? I believe thats what is leaking oil all over my engine. Any help would be great, thanks.

Do a search online for car recalls on google. This allows you to look up all cars and recalls. Yes, I remember seeing a recall on the ball joints. Call a dealer in your area. They are supposed to inspect them and replace them for free. As for your valve covers first degrease and clean your engine, drive it, look for fresh leaks to locate the problem. You can buy dye to put in the oil to make the leaks easier to find. If it is the 6 cylinder it would cost more because the rear valver cover is hard to get to and requires taking off the intake plenum. If it is the 4 cylinder it would be a piece of cake. If you are mechanically inclined I suggest you replace the gaskets yourself, especially if its a 4 cylinder. It would be too easy to do yourself then to pay someone else to change them. Also, another source of oil leak is the cam seals. Hope this helps.

Re: Ball Joints

Just to clarify, the recall was for premature wear on the balljoints. The dealer would inspect them and if they were worn out, replace 'em. If they weren't worn out, a special lubricant would be applied that was supposed to prevent the accelerated wear. Application of this grease would be considered compliance with the recall and if your ball joints wear out later, well too bad.

That's what happened to us. The special grease was applied while still in the possesion of a prior owner and when the ball joints wore out at 97,000 miles, we were told "TS baby" by the dealer. A couple of people recommended that we fight with Chrysler, but I found one ball joint for $40 on ebay, bought the other from our local auto parts store for $90 and installed them myself. Installation was surprisingly easy.

Re: Ball Joints

bump..same thing just happened to me yesterday, same parts were replaced a few years ago before i purchased the vehicle and are now junk. definately e-bay it for the parts if you can. its frustrating but it is certainly cheaper to just purchase and replace the parts than it is to take something like that to court

Re: Ball Joints

Thanks all. Got a family friend to do the job for me, $300 with parts. Maybe thats pricey, but was done right away, and most the cost was the parts. Nice and quiet now : ). Was squeaking REALLLLY bad before.
