1996 dodge avenger 2.5 v-6

with the engine at idle speed, it makes a tapping sound similar to a valve tap. when revved above 2k, the noise almost disappears. tha dealer says it is the oil pump tensioner but when i look up the part number, it says power steering pulley. is there more than 1 tensioner on the serpentine belt? the part # is: MD317370.

No, there is only one tensioner on the serpentine belt. It can be found right in the middle part of the front of the engine. There is one other small belt for the air conditioning but that has its own tensioner and is a seperate belt, assuming you have A/C. The serpentine belt tensioner would not be the problem. The oil pump is not driven off that belt. I am not %100 sure but I think it is driven off a gear on the end of the crankshaft. If not that then it would be driven off the timing belt and maybe the timing belt needs a new tensioner. If the tapping noise is coming from the belt area then it is the timing belt hitting the inside of the belt cover because it is loose and needs a new tensioner. If that is the case then you should do a tune up while your at it: new timing belt, tensioner, tensioner pulley, and water pump. My timing belt on my Stealth came loose and was hitting the timing belt cover. It made a tapping sound and I thought it was the engine knocking or ticking. If its not the belt than its lifter tick. Run engine oil flush through it then change the oil if thats the case. The lifters will tick because of oil slugde plugging up the oiler holes. Finally, if it really has low oil pressure dont drive it because it will damage internal engine parts. If I were you check these things first. Then get an oil pressure gauge(accurate one, not stock) and screw that in place of the sending unit to see what your oil pressure actually is.
