Engine Rebuild Costs....

I have a 1972 chevy C-10 SWB. I need to have the trans rebuilt and am debating on whether or not to get the engine rebuilt as well. The truck has sat for a good year without being cranked and I have no idea how many miles are on it. My question is what is the usual cost on getting a 350 rebuilt and installed. Is it cheaper to buy a new engine?? Thanks

you can get a long block for around 1300. Very easy to install.

If you are thinking of having someone else do it I would say it would be around 2k-2500 bucks. You have a sweet truck there, I have always wanted a 67-72 swb. IMO they are the nicest Chevys ever made. Two tone with a nice set of 15x10's... enjoy your truck.

Re: Engine Rebuild Costs....

I have rebuilt a 283 and I am working on a 350 LT1 for my truck, the 283 cost about 300, ( I just honed and reringed it and new gaskets and bearings) My LT1 is probably going to cost over 1000 to build.

Well let me ask aquestion. How hard would it be for me to build it myself. I have never built an engine before, I have done minor repairs like putting on a new water pump, replacing gaskets. Are there any good books giving directions step by step??

Re: Engine Rebuild Costs....

my 283 was the first one i did. i had my dad (he is a diesel mech) help me a little, but i did most of the work. chiltons are good. It's not real hard, you just need to make sure all your clearances are right and you need some speciality tools, valve spring compresser, piston ring compressor, engine hone, ridge reamer. You can get these fairly cheap and do the work yourself. Also check ebay for gasket and rebuild kits. Buy a Kit don't buy gaskets seperatley you will save a bundle doing this.

go with the GM crate engine. I think you can get one (stock 350) $1200?
thats suitable for your truck.
