radiator (auxillary) fan

Here lately I've noticed that when I shut off the engine I can smell antifreeze. I've checked for leaks on the ground, and found none. I've also realized that the radiator fan doesnt come on as it usually does (note: I'm referred to the one attached to the radiator, and not the big one). Question(s):
1) Should I take it somewhere to have the radiator flushed to check for leaks? Can I place like Skill Lube, or Oil Change Express be trusted to do such a job?
2) What is the importance of the radiator (auxillary) fan?
Thanks

Re: radiator (auxillary) fan

the aux rad fan helps to force cool air through the fins. it is a good thing to have.

a rad flush won't check for leaks--a pressure check will. i'm not familiar with these places--you may want a mechanic to play around under there.

check the wires to the fan and check for corrosion at the connectors. also check your fuses. the thermostat (or sensor) could be an issue also--in that it isn't sending a signal telling the fan to kick on.

a side note, check the passenger side floor board for any fluid leak, if your shutting off the truck, and you smell the fluid inside--you could have a heater core leak --possible.

The electric fan on the front of the radiator is only installed on a/c equipped isuzu's with auto trans. The electic fan only turns on when the a/c is used and hi temp calls for it. Keep your eye on the coolant level and temperature gauge until you track the source.

My Rodeo is a 5-speed... so I'll take your information to mean that the auxillary fan on the radiator is for A/C assistance. I'll keep a close eye on the temp gauge (its not running hot) and the coolent level.
Thanks.

Must be a Second Gen. thing because my 5 speed (with A/C) doesn't have an auxiliary fan.

Hmmm... my SIL's 2003 rodeo 3.2/4x4/5spd w/ a/c did not have the aux fan either!?! I'm totally confused now .
