Question Dropping in 350

Looking for info -1972 Chevelle 4 door -going from staight 6 to 350-8, but distributor is "Very Close" to firewall ,not sure if I have to change mounts (looks like I should) or where to find them.
I had someone tell me to take a 5 lb. hammer to firewall to make room. Don't want to go that route! Also, not sure if I need to change drive train if I slide 350 Turbo Tranny up to meet engine? Thanks for the Help

Re: Dropping in 350

I don't blame you for not wanting to go the BFH route, I wouldn't either. Does your 350 have an HEI distributor? If so that may be your only problem. You need to use a small cap distributor like what originally came on the V-8's before Chevy switched to HEI in 1975. You can buy electronic units like this or convert a points distributor over with a Pertronix kit or even just run the points.

I'm not sure I understand your drivetrain/trans question. Does the car have a 350 turbo now and you want to know if it will work with the 8? If so then yes.

Oh yeah, welcome aboard!

Re: Dropping in 350

go here to yearone.com
http://www.yearone.com/serverfiles/f...ain2.asp?cat=0

put in part number bg101

These are the frame mounts that you need to swap from L6 to V8.

TH350 for a L6 is not as strong as one built for a V8. It will work but I would suggest a rebuild, shift kit and a new converter.

Thanks for your quick response, it helps knowing more than 1 option to getting a thing done. The car has a 350 Turbo now on the 6 & we wanted to use it on the 8 as well, so glad it will work , 1 less thing to buy. This is my 1st restoration project, so me & my Son are learning alot!!!! Not the least of things PATIENCE !!! LOL JJ's Chevelle

Good info on the mounts. I thought the L6 and V8 transmissions had the same clutches, gears and shafts. What parts are weaker? The L6 probably has a higher stall torque converter, but that would help off the line, even with the V8 . I would definitely go with a shift improver kit on any auto transmission, (I hate mushy shifts) but if the trans is working fine now I wouldn't worry about a rebuild or new converter. A mild 350 V8 will not tear it up unless you plan on constantly abusing it.

Re: Dropping in 350

There is a difference in the clutch packs and the shift points. This means more sliping as far as the gearing I don't know.
