Unhappy 96 suburban rotates but will not start

i have a 96 surburban that engine rotates but will not start. in the past it has to turn over 2 or 3 times before it starts. when i would rapidly accelerate or try to the engine would completley bog down and you would have to take you foot off the pedal and gradually ease into your acceleration (don't ever pull out in front of that cement truck ha ha). i would get some backfiring. if i pull over and took off the cover off the carb? and then replaced it it would start right up and run fine unless i tried to rapidly accerlerate again. today it will not start. i hear the fuel pump turn on as soon as i turn the key. any suggestions?
thanks

No expert here. I assume you have TBI. You need to detemine if it is a fuel problem or an ignition problem.

For starters, pull off the air cleaner, have someone crank over the engine and see if the injectors are 'squirting' any gas down the throttle body. If so, you probably have an ignition problem of one sort or another.

Re: 96 suburban rotates but will not start

As BOOMYAL said, check for fuel reaching the TBI. Consider changing the fuel filter if you haven't in the past year or so, or if the truck has been sitting. If the fuel filter is severely plugged, it could allow some fuel, but not all the required fuel thru. I had a past truck that I let the fuel filter go too long, and it bogged down when I stepped on it. It would still run fine at the low rpm. Just an idea...

Try a coil wire.

Either you have a plugged up fuel filter or your your fuel pump is going out. I'd replace your fuel filter first because it's the cheapest, and because if it is partially plugged you could get mislead into replacing the fuel pump, if you fuel pressure and flow are low. Then if you still have the problem need to put a fuel pressure gage on it to check your fuel pressure.
