Z6 Issues

Alright, I got a 93 Civic with the z6 in it....yea yea yea, its a 5th gen and im in the wrong forum, but I trust more people on this forum than I do the other. The car was sitting in a salvage yard for a little while, don't think it was there long because it was still pretty much in 1 piece and the fuel still smells good in it. It got stripped out to be a race car so right now no wires from anything on the dash is connected, not even a gauge cluster. I had to rewire the ignition to a switch and push button, got everything done, flipped the switch, i hear some clicks of relays popping on, go to try and start it and I get fuel, but no spark. I have swapped out distributors with one I had laying around and still no luck.

Anyone know of any fuses or relays I need to check? i have no layouts on the fuses so I don't know whats what. If I don't get it figured out this weekend, when I go to work im gonna jack the fuse boxes from another civic(I work at a salvage yard), but I would like to get it running this weekend. I know it can start, it tried to start before I brought it home, just didn't have enough time to keep it running.

Re: Z6-Fuel, but No Spark

check all the under hood fuses, also, you may want to try another ignitor and/or coil. make sure your grounds are good too.

Re: Z6-Fuel, but No Spark

I'm hoping its not the ignitor or coil because I don't know if we have any more at work, sold the other one today. I'm gonna redo the grounds and everything when I get a chance. I checked all the fuses under the hood, 1 was missing, but i rigged on in from my 4th gen and still got nothing. There quite a few fuses and other crap missing from the interior fuse box.....

oh yea, not to mention we did get it to try to turn over before, which would mean it had spark at one time, so I would think the ignitor and coil was good in the one that was in it, but who knows.

Re: Z6-Fuel, but No Spark

Well found out it is getting spark...sprayed some ether in it and it backfired. But I think its just out of time. Gonna go get a timing belt for it tomorrow and make sure its timed right. I still don't know why I can't get a test light to work on the spark plug wires, but since it caught the ehter on fire, i know its getting spark, and I know for sure fuel is getting atleast to the fuel rail because i can pop the line loose and it releases fuel and pressure, so thats good. Hopefully its just the timing thats off. Any tips on timing it?

Re: Z6-Fuel, but No Spark

ok first thing is first, get the crank pulley set at TDC, there should be a mark on your timing cover and a mark on the pulley, the pulley should auctally ahve 4 marks, TDC is the one that is by itself, the 3 next to eachother are for igntion timing.

now that the bottom is set at tdc, losen the tensioner bolt, then remove the belt from the cam gear, there should be two marks on the cam gear, line them up with the head. and make sure its on the correct stroke or your valves will be opening the wrong time and you wont have any compression.

now that everything is on TDC slide the belt back on the cam gear. to tigthen the belt you need to turn the crank pulley counter clock wise, give it a good 1/4 turn or so.

now set the crank pulley back to the TDC mark and double check to make sure the cam gear is also at the TDC mark. if everything is good, start her up!

Re: Z6-Fuel, but No Spark

ok, nevermind again, stupid book is misleading, couldn't manage to find a mark anywhere around the crank pulley. Are the only marks on the timing cover? if so i gotta go dig out my other motor and see if i can get the damn motor mount to break loose.

No, theres an arrow cast into the oil pumo and a notch on your timing gear. Should look like this. I have a whole timing how-to in the FAQ where this pisture was taken from. Its for a DOHC but you get the jist.

Re: Z6-Fuel, but No Spark

Thanks, that helps alot, i wasn't for sure if the little pully had a mark on it or not, the only mark i knew was on the bigger pulley. And your forums helps alot on ideas on breaking that bastard loose...really wish i had air at my house.

Re: Z6-Fuel, but No Spark

Alright, managed to get the pully off without as much effort as i expected and found the mark there, still haven't found the mark for the cam gear, but i believe its on the timing cover. Going by the other marks its atleast close to TDC. I ran a compression check on it today and all cylinder checked out good other than #2, i had no compression on it. There are no horrible noises when trying to start it, and doesn't feel like anything is hitting when turning the crank by hand. What it seems like its doing is the intake valves are open when its on its compression stroke because he keep shooting stuff back out of the intake, not a constant thing, but every second or so. What do you guys think? think its just off maybe a tooth, or something else i don't wanna think about?
