79 Secondary Coil

What is the official name for the secondary coil for the '79 LeSabre? I have replaced the one on top of the distributer cap, with no improvement, now I need to do the other but I can't find the part on the AdvanceAuto site without knowing the real name for it.

thanks

Re: 79 Secondary Coil

Are you referring to the ignition module or (igniter) located at the base of the distributor? As Max said, you only have one coil on the 79.
By the way, what is your problem, no spark?

Re: 79 Secondary Coil

This would be the part you are looking for, it is called the ignition module or igniter;

Re: 79 Secondary Coil

Also make sure that the spring and the carbon pin (located between the cap and the coil) are in good shape,if it isn't you will not transfer spark to the rotor,good luck and let us know how it works out.

Re: 79 Secondary Coil

Hello.Ithink you are looking for the pickup coil.You will have to remove the distributor from the engine.Then remove the drive gear on the shaft.with the shaft removed from the body,You will find a round coil.That explaines why you have to remove the shaft,Because the shaft runs thrue the coil.There are two wires that connect to the iginition module.I replaced one on a 77 Buick years ago.It is not that hard to do.Just make sure that you roll the engine to top dead center before you remove the distributor.Be careful when you remove the distributor from engine block,As not to damage the rubber "O" ring on the distributor body.I think the offical name for the part is Pickup coil,Or Relucter coil.Good luck,Let me know how things turn out...Diesel 1962...

Re: 79 Secondary Coil

I had to replace several pick-ups during my life, however many more ignition modules. It could be either of them and it would be a good idea to replace both, but not at the same time. If you do, you will never know which one was faulty. I guess the easier one to replace would be the module since you don't have to tear the distributor apart to do it, and then if that should fix it, just start driving and enjoy the day. You can replace the pick-up later, when you have a nice day, the wife has gone shopping and you have a six pack handy!

Most major parts stores can check (test) the ignition module for you.
