Burning Oil

I have a 1992 GMC Sierra K1500 and it seems to be burning alot of oil. Anybody know of any tricks or have any ideas on how I may be able to slow the oil consumption. I've seen at some stores that they have chemical addiditives that claim to "reduce oil consumption" but im not sure. Anyone have any Ideas?

You can try some stuff called Motor Honey, all it does is thicken your oil. What weight oil are you running now. In my old 86 350 I was running sae30 to help keep the oil consumption down. Other than that have a shop do a leak down test and see were the blow by is coming from, and fix what is wearring out.

Most of your problem is due to a dirty engine, that is, sludge,dirty ring packs, etc. This occurs even if you have been timely about oil & filter changes. New engines begin to show these signs early as 20-30K. I know of one product that will clean your engine that is not "Snake Oil". It's called Auto Rx. I am very skeptical about engine products but this has worked for me and some of the toughest auto pros around. You can check-out Auto Rx at www.autorx.com and read about most anything vehicle/oil related on the forums of www.bobistheoilguy.com. These (independent) forums rip apart any myths about additives, oil,lubes,filters, etc. Good information overall for vehicle care and longevity. Also, one other note about Auto Rx, it's a lot cheaper than tearing down an engine and it will clean your engine, but it will not cure any underlying mechanical problems. Hope this helps!

Do you get the blue smoke at startup out the exhaust? GM only put an O-ring for the exhaust valve seal on the TBI engines. The O-ring cracks from heat and you will burn oil once the O-ring is broken.

Fel-pro (and others) make a real valve seal for the exhaust. They can be replaced while the engine is in the truck.
