a/c compressor so hot

I can hear a squeaking noise when I will turn my a/c on. Just few days ago it stopped blowing cold air. I only get the cabin air temperature circulating through my blower. I tried to switch it on and all i can hear is a squeaking sound under the hood. I tried to step on the gas forcing to make it louder so I could localize the noise then I smell a burning fume and a little smoke. I touched the compressor and it was burning hot. Now, I would like to ask help from the experts here on how to deal with this problem. thanks a lot in advance. My blower is still working until now,

Sounds like your compressor is seized up. The squeal and burning smell is probably the drive belt. The belt will melt down and break soon.

Yep, sure does sound like the compressor is locked up. Sometimes the belt will slip over the pulley, or if the compressor clutch is worn enough, the clutch will slip until it gets hot enough to burst into flames.

Thanks for both of your reply. Another question. Do I need to change the compressor clutch too or other parts to solve the problem? I'm going to the shop tomorrow at least I know where to stand so the mechanic will not overcharge me.

Its probably a good idea to put a new clutch on there since the old one has probably been slipping and could be damaged.

Re: a/c comressor so hot

Actually supposed to be warmer in Denver to day then in much of Florida. With the humidity in miami I would probably be running the a/c too.

Besides, he has a '99 and even if it was cold and snowy the a/c would probably still be running. It comes on with the defroster setting.

They will probably replace the filter/dryer when they change the compressor. Usually a good idea to do that. Otherwise its just a matter of recovering the refrigerant, replacing the compressor, pulling a vacuum on the system, then recharging.

I bet if you want a hotter temp compared to your place then this is the place for you. That's the reason why this place is called the sunshine state.

Re: a/c comressor so hot

So I went to the mechanic and he said the compressor is really dead. I have a friend who offered his wrecked Honda passport's compressor, he said its the same one. Anyone from you guys could confirm that it would fit?

I never understood that. Colorado actually has more sunny days per year then florida or california. We should be the sunshine state

As long as your buddies passport is the same generation (maybe other gens would fit too) and the same engine it should be the same compressor. Lucky you!

I got a noise in my A/C compressor pulley bearing.
Since the A/C is fine i replaced the drive belt with w/o A/C
and i will return the original belt by summer.

I think if you're replacing the compressor yourself go with the used compressor, if you're paying for it go with brand new one.
