engine fire prevention

A quick reminder to all plastic intake manifolded engine owners. My 95 (97 engine with about 75k) caught fire upon returning from a trip. The car sat in an airport parking garage for 2 cold, damp weeks and the engine caught on fire after it made a rather loud "pop" on about the 2nd revolution. Seems that the fire started in the intake mainfold. Interestingly, GM had a recall on 98 to 01 (I think) 3.8's for leaking fuel pressure regs that may allow raw fuel to dump into the intake manifold. They just didn't cover the earlier years (maybe because the liability would be bearable with less of the older cars on the road? Or, maybe they can blame it on unsubstantiated maintenence, because of thier age?). Anyway, my wonderful (yes, I mean that) insurance co paid me for the car, so I cleaned it out and waved goodbye to an old friend. BUT, I'm pissed at GM because I perceive that they may have had a bigger problem than they let on. Prior to the fire, I never smelled raw fuel in the engine compartment, and I was in there monthly during the winter especially, for washer fluid. So, I'll check in once in a while and see if any of my 8 yrs with 2 PAs can benefit someone.

PS: I bought a Toyota for the wife, and took her newer Impala! But, will think long and hard about buying another GM.

The probable reason you were not informed was due that you most likely not the owner of the 97car that the engine came out of,because you would have been notified of the issue and told what options were available.The earlier year engines were not involved.GM is in deep trouble and I hope they come out of without letting the people think they were abandoned,I believe if they would have listened to there customers and service personel they would not be where they are today.I guess we taught the other countries too good.
