Front wheel stud replacement

We were trying to take the wheel off of a 2005 cavalier to paint the calipers, while doing that one of the studs stripped off (due to shitty service at the wheel shop) what is involved in replacing the stud?

go to a wheel shop and have them do it, unless you have a kit t o do it, they only charge like $25 to put a new on on not even that.

Re: Front wheel stud replacement

take the wheel and brake off, usually thats all it requires.. sometimes you need to take the hub off though but usually theres a notch where you can fit a new stud in without taking the hub off..

pound the stud out with something large (big hammer and chisel) and put the new one in, when you pop the new one in your gonna be some kinda tool the "draw it in" (heh, im tired i can't think of a tool).. or you could do it the way i did it, put a bunch of washers on it and tighten it down with the lugnut.

oh and 97 cavy, why take it to a shop when you can do it yourself for 2-3 bucks?

Re: Front wheel stud replacement

You can purchase a small tool that looks similar to a c-clamp that will press out the old stud. It's a little more graceful then pounding it out but either will work.

I also second the drawing it in with some washers and a lug nut. Depending on the size of the washers though you may jimmy up the lug nut surface. Either use a regular nex nut, or purchase a replacement nut just in case. An impact wrench if you have one makes very short order of the whole process.

All this presumes that you can do it on-vehicle and not have to remove the hub. If you have to remove the hub, it's even easier to press it in and out as you can use a bench vice and a deep socket.
