I have a 96 Jetta 2.0L also and when I disconnect the battery, the alarm comes on as you say when you connect the battery. Have you tried inserting the ignition key in the door lock and turning it to disable the alarm? I've done this several times and it has worked each time.

Re: Problems w/the alarm 1996 Jetta

I had the same problem with my 96 GLS, and I couldnt deactivate the alarm bcz the door locks froze up a few years ago. I have disabled the alarm by having someone connect the battery and then I was in the car starting it. If the alarm sounded, I was ask the person to disconnect and reconnect. The car always started without the alarm after about five tries. Good luck.

Re: Problems w/the alarm 1996 Jetta

What is with Jetta's and these damn crazy alarm systems?

I have a similar issue with my 94 Jetta III GLS. Every once in a while, when I start my car the alarm will make the horn honk real fast until the engine is on, and tonight it was going off when I made left turns. It was quite embarrassing because people thought I was honking at them, and I would really love to know if anyone has any ideas on what's wrong or how to fix it, without having to completely disable it.

Re: Problems w/the alarm 1996 Jetta

Hi
I have a 94 Jetta GLS with the exact same alarm problem. The problem is most likely in the door switches. I finally just completely disabled my alarm system and now I have no problems.

cbfloyd,

That sounds like a good solution to me. These alarms are simply a pain in my rear. Would you please tell us how you disabled the alarm? - R

Re: Problems w/the alarm 1996 Jetta

I have a 96 Jetta, and whenever I disconnect I have the same problem and the best way (for me at least) is to make sure the red is connected first, and just kind of wiggle the black one on gently. It doesn't work everytime, but just be a little touchy with it ( sorry I know this is incredibly vague, but my advice is to "fiddle" with how you connect the battery terminals)

Good luck!
