Hello all, I have a 1997 pontiac grad prix SE. 4 doors, It has an after market alarm, the brand I do not know. My transmitter slowly quit working. I have repalced the battery. It worked for a cpl days. frist the unlock button quit, then the lock button quit and then the trunk button quit. I have tried to reprograming Here's the procedure i followed to program the remote:
Transmitter Programming No Tools Required In the event that a transmitter is lost, program the old and the new transmitters into the memory of the remote control door lock receiver. Up to 4 transmitters may be programmed. Important Once the keyless entry receiver enters the programming/diagnostic mode, the programming of the first transmitter erases all previous transmitter programming information. You must then program all of the transmitters. Program only 1 vehicle remote control door lock receiver at a time. If you program multiple receivers simultaneously, the same transmitter could possibly be programmed to more than 1 remote control door lock receiver. Perform the following steps: 1. Sit in the vehicle driver's seat. 2. Remove the ignition key from the ignition lock cylinder. 3. Close all of the vehicle's doors. 4. Remove the MALL PGM fuse from the fuse panel. Refer to Electronic Diagnosis in Body and Chassis. 5. Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the ACC position. 6. Turn the ignition lock cylinder OFF, then back to ACC within 1 second. 7. Open and then close any vehicle door. You will hear a chime when the remote control door lock receiver enters the programming/diagnostic mode. If you do not hear a chime, start again at step 1. If the remote control door lock receiver does not enter the programming/diagnostic mode after a second attempt, refer to Electrical Diagnosis. Important After 7 seconds you may hear a chime confirming successful synchronization. After approximately 14 seconds, you will hear a chime confirming successful programming. 8. Press and hold the transmitter LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for 14 seconds. 9. Repeat step 8 in order to program each additional transmitter. 10. Remove the ignition key from the ignition lock cylinder. 11. Install the MALL PGM fuse back into the fuse panel. Refer to Electrical Diagnosis in Body and Chassis. Validate that all the transmitters that were programmed operate properly. Refer to Keyless Entry System Operation . This did not work and was tried several times I have tried to resynchronize following these steps On remote synchronization, you press both LOCK and UNLOCK buttons for 7 seconds or until the horn beeps once. After that you go to RAV, remote activation verification which shows whether the RKE remote commands have been received by the RCDLR and BCM modules. This did not work and was tried several times The transmitter is only 1.5 years old and was put on a tester at a dealer. I was told..It is putting out a signal and should be ok and that it might be the receiver . I cant seem to resync. or reprogram locks and alarm. They will work manualy and there is no other problem. A receiver is $152.00. Is this it ??? will it fix this ? |

Re: keyless remote transmitter and receiver
Steps 5 and 6 are the most crucial in the instructions. If the key on off on isn't done quickly, it will not enter programming mode. Also, I'm not sure if there is a sensor that detects the presence of a human in the drivers seat, but since you have to lean all the way across the car to reach the MALL/PCM fuse (effectively taking your weight off the seat), I had an assistant in the car pull the fuse for me, as I couldn't get it to work by myself.

Re: keyless remote transmitter and receiver
I would pull out the mall/pcm fuse from passenger side. I then went over to driver side ,sat down and continued with step 4 and 5. I do 4 and 5 and get chimes. Several of them. They seem to chime a code or a number like the "check engine " light flash's codes.

Re: keyless remote transmitter and receiver
this works the same way with aftermarket alarms as well as factory keyless entry remotes?

Re: keyless remote transmitter and receiver
I have recently discovered the wires for the sensor that detects if the seat belt has been buckled or not. They are two wires going into the seatbelt buckle and they where not hooked up. Would this effect reprogramming?

Re: keyless remote transmitter and receiver
I have a 99 GT. I bought this car a few months ago and it only came with 1 key, no remotes, etc... I had the dealership look up the vin to make sure it was equipped with remote keyless entry and it was. So I got a remote and had a technician try and program it.
I tried doing it myself first, following those instructions about pulling the mall fuse, turning the key back and forth, etc... But I couldnt get it to work. Well thats when I had a tech at the dealership try. He tried several times and never could get it to work. He got as far as having the remote unlock the trunk and the panic button work (horn and lights) but the doors never would lock and unlock. You would think it would either program all the way or not at all. It seems this thing was only programming half way since the trunk and panic buttons worked but the lock and unlock didnt work. I know the lock and unlock buttons work too because you can hold them together for 7 seconds and the horn will blow (resync). Anyone ever saw this before? What may be the problem here? One other thing was when you turn the key forward then back to get in program mode, the directions say you should hear a beep letting you know you are in program mode. Well when we do it, the car will beep once, twice, three, and four times in series 2 consecutive times, AND it did not beep after holding the lock/unlock. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. |

Re: keyless remote transmitter and receiver
Hi deec73
I get the beeping in series and what seems to be a 1/2 way programed remote as you described. My car is a 1997 Pontiac GP SE. During the reprogramming after the beeping I hold down the lock and unlock buttons and get nothing. As far as the 1/2 way programing. I do not have a panic button but, my trunk worked and my lock part worked. The unlock is where the trouble is. It did work at one time but slowly stopped like maybe the battery was getting weak. I changed the battery and this is how it all started. I have also replace the transmitter which seem to temporarily work but then did the same thing, slowly stopped. The Dealer looked at my transmitter and says its working. In the program instructions it says to be sitting in the driver seat and then pull the mall fuse. If sitting in the driver seat I would be activating the sensor in the seat that says something is in that seat and that activates the little red seatbelt guy (in between the speedometer and rpm gauge) and the chimes telling you the seat belt is not buckled. My seatbelt guy and chimes do not work. It did in the recent passed. So I started looking into this and that is how I found mine to be disconnected. So as far as the car thinks, with these wires being disconnected, is the same thing as the seatbelt being buckled. There is no talk about buckling the seatbelt in the reprogramming instructions. Does your seatbelt guy and chimes work ? I'm wondering is this is messing up the reprogramming. |

Re: keyless remote transmitter and receiver
Im clueless to what the problem is, thats why im posting here. The technician at the dealership was clueless too as to why only half of the program was working. He said he was going to do some more research Monday and see if he could find out what may be going wrong. Ill post here if I get it working.
Anyone else have anything to add to this? |

Re: keyless remote transmitter and receiver
I struggled with programming my car until I had an assistant do the fuse pulling for me. Mine would do the same thing your's is doing until I did. It seems as though when I leaned to pull the fuse, essentially taking my weight off the drivers seat, it interrupted the programing sequence. When I had my wife pull the fuse for me, following the instructions, it programmed without a problem. My car is a 99 GT, just for reference. The most important step seems to be the switching of the key QUICKLY (the whole step needs to be done in a second).

Anyone else? This looked like a good "technical" website, any technicians here dealt with this?

Re: keyless remote transmitter and receiver
I re-read the original post. Are you trying to use the proceedure for the original equipment programming to program the aftermarket unit? If so, that's why it isn't working. If you're trying to bypass the aftermarket unit, and you purchased a new OEM transmitter, there may be a problem with the factory receiver module, and that's why they put the aftermarket unit in.

Re: keyless remote transmitter and receiver
I never said anything about "aftermarket", I dont think? I bought a car and it didnt have the key fobs. I ran a check on the vin to see if it was equipped with keyless entry and it was. So I went to a dealer and got keyfobs for it, but the tech is having trouble getting the entire process to work. All hes getting is the trunk unlock and horn/alarm setting. The lock and unlock part isnt working for some reason. Seems only half of the process is programming.

Re: keyless remote transmitter and receiver
Quote from original post "Hello all, I have a 1997 pontiac grad prix SE. 4 doors, It has an after market alarm, the brand I do not know. My transmitter slowly quit working"
By the way you said that, it sounds as if you are attempting to program the alarm mentioned above. I would try unhooking the aftermarket alarm first, as it could be conflicting with the factory keyless entry. PM me with the last 8 digits of your vin, and the number on the back of the transmitter the dealer sold you, just to ensure you didn't get the wrong part. The 97-98 GP's have a different type of receiver module that doesn't have as many prgramming features as the 99-newer, and the transmitters may be different.

Re: keyless remote transmitter and receiver
I was quoting the original poster, guess I need to pay attention to the person I'm responding to.
