speedo noise

my speedo makes a terrible noise - it's quite annoying. I greased the speedo cable and the noise disappeared, but came back pretty soon. If i unhook the cable the noise is gone. I put quite some grease in there. And the noise sounds more like some plastic gear. Any ideas how to get rid of this noise - so far i was turning up the volume at my radio, but I’ll be deaf if that keeps going like that ;-)
Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: speedo noise

Curious about what kind of grease you used? Pull it out again and coat it generously with white grease. Pack some in the housing, too. You can get just the cable at the parts place or get the housing and the cable, but try greasing it again first.

Re: speedo noise

All your noise is in the speedo head. Best bet is to go to a salvage yard and get a 85mph one out of a /93 car.

the speedo noise in my '93 was caused by low trans fluid. I filled the trans and the noise hasn't come back.
