1991 accord and burnt-up automatic transmission ATCUs

please help:

my accord has burnt-up two automatic transmission control units or ATCUs. i replaced the battery and the electrical portion of the ignition switch and the problem persists. a mechanic i spoke to said that something is grounding or shorting out and causing the atcu to burn up. he told me to check the transmission solenoids, that one or more may be the cause of my trouble.

questions: where are these solenoids? how do i diagnose them? how do i replace them? is there a good book that tells one how to do this diagnosis and repair?

any help will be greatly appreciated. money is tite for me and i hope to fix the car myself. thanks,

bec1

Re: 1991 accord and burnt-up automatic transmission ATCUs

If you lift the hood and look to your left just above the dip stick, you will see two round cylinders. They are the shifting solenoid and lockup solenoid. Also check the wire from the solenoids to the harness, it could be damaged. Wire colors are grn/blk and yel for the lockup with a ground case. So there should be some resistence between the leads and the case. On the other solenoid, the colors are Blu/yel and Grn/wht. Same for the ground. There is a voltage test where you can test them, but I don't know what voltage you use and what the valve should do when voltage is applied. Maybe someone else here can help..
