HELP!! 92 2.0 Liter......Broken Timing Belt?
Hey All,
I have a stupid question that I am sure I know the answer to already...here goes. I have a 92 Galant with a 2.0 L SOHC engine. I have been agonizing over a "no spark" issue for a month or so and the wife is "Expecting" me to come up with a fix soon. Had a new box, dist., wires, plugs installed 2 months ago when original box let me down and had car running fine for several weeks. Then she just "Quit" on wife after leaving the house one day. Light Bulb went off today as I tried cranking engine and noticed crank sound sounded faster than it used to. QUESTION: Should I be able to see the timing belt rotate if I remove 2 belt cover bolts on top of engine to the right side of the valve cover? and watch as I crank? "It aint rotating". Is this my spark and starting problem? Thanks in advance for any responses...Much appreciated! Chris Todd

I really do not have the know how to answer that but I would highly doubt it is a broken timing belt. Your pistons would be hitting the valves and your engine would SOON be destroyed.

Yes, timing belt should rotate when you crank the engine.

Thanks for your input guys! I don't know how there couldn"t have been some interference when my cam stopped rotating (either broken belt or other?) from all that I have read, but I guess I need to pop all the cover off and pull the head to be completly sure if there is truly any damage..or is it 100% chance that there is? Hate to junk the ole girl if she has a chance. Did run nice and has good tires...just burned a little oil.

SOHC engine may not be an interference head. My corolla (dohc) broke the timing belt, and I have not had any problems after I replaced it. Sometimes you just get lucky. Hope everything turns out for you.

ya your timing belt broke and by you constantly trying to turn it over made it worst and maybe bent all your valves, now you have to go and get a compression test to see how many you need to replace. Or you can get a used head and put it on there.
