I own a 1993 Honda Civic Si and its basically stock and i'm new to the game.
All that's done to it is a computer chip (unknown the type or w/e to me) and the exhaust is a stright pipe with a resonator. I've come to understand i have a d16 with 300,000+ miles on it, (still rev's and performs fairly well, can keep up with my friends grand am GT pretty well and its slightly modded) and was wondering if it would be worth (obviously overhauling and..) tuning one of these up, over the high price of the engine and gas via an engine swap. Or if i did an engine swap would i be able to use just the long block like this http://www.hmotorsonline.com/shop/sc...age&item=30023 or would i need the tranny and everything else? because if the cost to overhaul is super high i might just swap. Also i was wondering if there was a site dedicated to D16's or something like that. Any info would help! (another reason i'm slightly against a swap is that i'm planning on buying an 05' RSX Type-S in a couple years (cant afford it now, it'll be 17kish by then too) and if it were up to me id just swap a K20a in my EG but thats like 5k!) |

Re: A Clean 93 Si Stock-ish Owner With Some Questions
For a swap (like the link you posted) you'll need more than just the long block (axles, transmission, ECU, mounts). If you're concerned about gas mileage, then the b18b with it's transmission will be a good choice. The transmission is geared long, so it will keep the rpms down. However it will also slow acceleration.
For D-series info check out www.turbod16.com www.sohchonda.com. But with that many miles, it's best to just rebuild the engine if you're going get more performance from it. And your chipped ECU might be giving you a few extra hp, but it's also killing your gas mileage even more. If you want real performance out of your d16, then you should go turbo; otherwise it'd really be a waste of $. And a K-series in a '92-'95 civic is more like 10K with all the parts you need (thought I'd throw that out there). |

Yeah, i thought about it and i want to definately do a swap, it seems the engines can handle more and have more of a backing with support and parts. I was looking into a b16 or b18 (i was interested in a CRVtec but i guess they're weak, and it seems so complicated)
Basically, i want power, and lots of it. I just thought there was a way around premium gas. |

Re: A Clean 93 Si Stock-ish Owner With Some Questions
If you're that worried about premium grade gas, then do a swap. If you crave power over the price to fill your tank, go d16 turbo. You can make a lot of power from a D-series engine. They are also plentiful (because most people swap them out for B-series), and parts are cheaper than for b-series. With a stock d16z6 engine and a DIY turbo kit (for around $1,500), you will have more hp than a b16a with no problem. However, with the amount of miles on your engine, you're going to have to rebuild it. You could rebuild it to stock specs (and parts), or you could build it for boost. Depends on how much $ you're willing to spend and what kind of power you want out of it. And obviously reliability goes down as well (modified engine vs stock engine). I've been researching for 3 years now, and I myself have decided to go the turbo d-series way (over a b or h-series swap).

Re: A Clean 93 Si Stock-ish Owner With Some Questions
all of the b series motor except for the b18b are high compression motors which = the need for premium gas. So either way you're not getting around gas prices.
